KLD 20th Anniversary Retrospective

In 2008, KLD celebrates its twentieth year as an independent provider of ESG investment research. From this perspective on the practice of socially responsible investing, KLD is reflecting on what we’ve learned.

We’ve compiled a timeline of significant developments in the history of SRI, and we’ve also interviewed some of the thought leaders who have helped to shape our industry.

1988 - KLD Research & Analytics founded

1990 - KLD’s Domini 400 Social Index, first broad-based SRI benchmark index, launched

1991 - Domini Social Equity Fund, the first socially screened index fund, launched

1994 - SOCRATES, the first computerized social investment database, launched

1995 - KLD becomes founding member of US Social Investment Forum

1998 - KLD Compliance released

1999 - KLD Catholic Values 400 launched

1999 - $1 billion in assets under management in funds based on KLD’s indexes

2001 - Top 3,000 US companies by market capitalization now profiled in SOCRATES

2001 - KLD Large Cap & Broad Market Indexes launched

2001 - SOCRATES 5.0, the first on-line social investment database, launched

2002 - KLD begins offering emerging markets research

2004 - KLD Social Select Index, first socially responsible ETF, launched

2005 - KLD creates Index group

2005 - KLD Global Climate 100 index launched

2006 - KLD Sudan Compliance service released

2006 - KLD 400 Social Index iShares ETF, the first benchmark social ETF, launched

2006 - KLD launches Dividend Achievers Social Index (DASI), first dividend Index

2007 - KLD Global Sustainability Index, the first family of benchmark sustainability indexes launched

2007 - KLD Iran Compliance service released

2007 - $11 billion in assets under management in funds based on KLD’s indexes

2008 - KLD launched first fixed income sustainability index
