KLD Signs Investors’ Call for Climate Action:
Investors Endorse Stringent Federal Climate Policy
In March, KLD joined an unprecedented coalition of investors and businesses managing $4 trillion in combined assets calling for Washington to take action and pass legislation that would curb the pollution causing global climate change.
The coalition is comprised of CEOs of institutional investors, asset managers and corporations. The group was coordinated by Ceres, the world's largest network of investors, environmentalists and companies united for sustainable prosperity, and the Investor Network on Climate Risk, a network of institutional investors and financial institutions dedicated to promoting better understanding of the financial risks and investment opportunities posed by climate change.
KLD was one of 65 signers that chose to endorse the Call to Action—a statement that provides the “business and economic rationale for climate action” and calls urgently for “a national policy that reduces greenhouse gas emissions consistent with targets scientists say are needed to avoid the dangerous impacts of global warming”, as stated in Ceres’ March 19th press release.
Specifically, investors asked for the three steps of action and leadership to be taken:
- A reduction of greenhouse gases (GHGs) of 60-90% below 1990 levels by 2050, preferrably through market-based solutions such as a cap-and-trade system;
- A realignment of national energy and transportation policies to encourage the uptake of new and existing clean technologies;
- Greater clarity by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of what companies should disclose to investors on issues related to climate change in their financial reporting
The signers, among them CalPERS, Merrill Lynch, BP America, and DuPont, recognize the opportunities that climate change presents for investing in clean energy and climate-friendly technologies, and the risks of not acting soon to mitigate the effects of climate change.
