Red Hat, Inc. Added to KLD's Domini 400 Social Index

BOSTON, MA - January 12, 2004 - KLD Research & Analytics, Inc., an independent investment research firm, announced today that Red Hat, Inc. (RHAT) has been added to KLD's Domini 400 SocialSM Index (DS 400 Index). Red Hat, Inc. is headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Red Hat, Inc. markets a commercial version of Linux, the open-source operating system. The company also provides technical support and maintenance services, custom development, consulting services, training and education, and hardware certification.

Reasons the company was added to KLD's DS 400 Index

  • Red Hat's software products are built with open source code. Open source code can be looked at and modified easily, as opposed to proprietary code that remains hidden. The company also created the first operating systems for businesses based on open source code. Proponents of open source code maintain that the benefits of computer technology are more likely to spread to different economic levels of society with the availability of open source code as compared with restricted, patented code. In addition, improvements can be made more rapidly when code is openly available, as well as fixes for security problems.

  • Through its "Open Schools" program, Red Hat provides any interested accredited school, in the U.S. and abroad, with open-source software and licenses, regardless of the school's size or budget. The company assesses the computing needs of participating schools, provides open-source software and applications, and offers technical assistance. The schools provide their own hardware.

About the KLD Family of Indexes
KLD's Domini 400 Social Index (DS 400 Index) is the established benchmark for measuring the impact of social screening on financial performance. Launched in May 1990, the DS 400 Index is the first benchmark for equity portfolios subject to multiple social screens. The index consists of 400 diversified equities that pass a broad range of social screening criteria. The KLD Broad Market SocialSM Index (KLD BMS Index) is the screened subset of the Russell 3000® Index, and the KLD Large Cap SocialSM Index (KLD LCS Index) is the screened subset of the Russell 1000® Index. The KLD BMS and LCS Indexes were launched on January 1, 2001.
