Office
Depot, Inc. Added to
KLD's Domini 400 Social Index
BOSTON,
MA - February 24, 2005 - KLD Research & Analytics, Inc.,
an independent investment research firm, announced today
that Office Depot, Inc. (ODP) has been added to
KLDs
Domini 400 SocialSM
Index (DS 400 Index). Office Depot, Inc. is headquartered
in Delray Beach, Florida.
Office
Depot owns and operates approximately 900 retail office
supply stores throughout the U.S. and Canada under the
Office Depot and Viking Office Products names. In addition,
the company operates retail stores and catalog services
outside the U.S. The company sells general office supplies
and services; technology and related products; and office
furniture. Through its business services division the
company provides delivery and contract services.
Reasons KLD added the company
to the Domini 400 Social Index
- As of 2004, Office
Depot offered sustainability audits to its corporate
customers. These audits, conducted by GreenOrder, an
independent consulting firm, benchmark and project environmental
performance; generate customized recommendations about
alternative products that are recycled or energy efficient;
and show companies how easily and cost-effectively they
can make the switch.
- In response to criticism
from environmental groups, Office Depot has taken several
steps to increase recycled paper products for sale at
its stores. The company has a goal to achieve an average
of 30% post-consumer recycled fiber and alternative
fiber content for all paper it produces, sells and distributes.
Its Green Book catalog lists only environmentally preferable
products. In addition,
the company converted its Copy & Print Centers to use
Office Depot's EnviroCopy recycled paper as the default
type for black and white copies in all high-speed and
self-service copy machines at no additional charge to
customers.
- One woman, Cynthia
Campbell, serves among the companys
five principal senior line executives. She is executive
vice president of North American delivery sales.
- Office Depot is an
S&P 500 company.
