The
E. W. Scripps Company Added to KLD's Domini 400
Social Index
BOSTON, MA - March 10, 2004 - KLD Research
& Analytics, Inc., an independent investment research
firm, announced today that The E. W. Scripps Company
(SSP) has been added to KLD's Domini 400 SocialSM
Index (DS 400 Index). The E. W. Scripps Company
is headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The
E. W. Scripps Company publishes 21 daily newspapers
in the U.S.; operates four national television networks,
including Home & Garden Television, Food Network,
Fine Living and DIY - Do It Yourself Network; operates
10 television stations; and markets consumer goods
through its Shop At Home division.
Reasons
the company was added to KLD's DS 400 Index
-
Compared with its industry peers, E.W. Scripps
has enjoyed good relations with its unionized
workforce. Strained union-management relations
are common in the newspaper industry. As of December
2003, E.W. Scripps reported that it had not experienced
any work stoppages at its current operations since
1985.
-
E. W. Scripps is recognized for quality journalism.
In 2003 the company's Rocky Mountain News
won a Pulitzer Prize for breaking news photography.
-
E. W. Scripps has made a strong commitment to
its local community. Compared to other companies
in its industry the company is exceptionally generous
in its charitable giving. Through its Scripps
Howard Foundation, the company donated 1.83% of
trailing three-year net earnings before taxes
(NEBT). The industry average is 0.94% of trailing
NEBT. The foundation's Greater Cincinnati Fund
supports groups that focus on education, families,
social services, arts and culture, and inclusive
civic affairs.
-
The company has demonstrated a commitment to promote
diversity in the U.S. media industry. In December
2003, the company established the Scripps Academy
for Hispanic Journalists, a training and education
program for up-and-coming Hispanic journalists.
E. W. Scripps has also launched an initiative
to improve news coverage of Hispanics and increase
the number of qualified Hispanic journalists and
other professionals employed on the staffs of
its newspapers. In September 2002, the company
donated $10 million to Hampton University, a historically
black university in Virginia, to build the Scripps
Howard School of Journalism & Communications.
