M&T Bank Corporation Added to
KLD's Domini 400 Social Index
BOSTON,
MA - May 27, 2005 - KLD Research & Analytics, Inc. announced
today that M&T Bank Corporation (MTB) has been added to
KLD's Domini 400 SocialSM
Index (DS 400 Index). M&T Bank Corporation is headquartered
in Buffalo, New York.
M&T
Bank provides commercial, retail, and other banking services,
including commercial real estate, discretionary portfolio
and mortgage banking services. The company's two main
bank subsidiaries are the Manufacturers and Traders Trust
Company and M&T Bank. The banks collectively offer commercial
banking, trust and investment services.
Reasons KLD added
the company to the Domini 400 Social Index
- M&T Bank has notable
charitable giving. In FY 2003, the company donated 1.98%
($13.7 million) of trailing three-year net earnings
before taxes to charity. This level of charitable giving
is higher than most companies followed by KLD.
- The company supports
primary and secondary public education. Between 1994
and 2004, the company donated $10 million to the Westminster
Community School, in Buffalo, New York. With financial
support from the bank, the school became Buffalo's first
conversion charter school. According to the Buffalo
News, the Westminster Community School has been
credited with dramatically raising the area's test scores.
- M&T Bank has a policy
against discrimination based on sexual orientation and
provides domestic partner medical benefits to qualified
employee partners.
- Nonemployee members
of M&T's board of directors received a total compensation
package that is lower than that of most companies followed
by KLD.
