Smith International, Inc. Added to
KLD's Domini 400 Social Index

BOSTON, MA - July 28, 2005 - KLD Research & Analytics, Inc. announced today that Smith International, Inc. (SII) has been added to KLD's Domini 400 SocialSM Index (DS 400 Index).

Smith International is headquartered in Houston, Texas. It manufactures and markets products and services to the oil and gas exploration and production industry, the petrochemical industry and other industrial markets. The company's products and services are used for drilling, well completion and well re-entry operations. In addition, it manufactures solids-control and separation equipment, oilfield production chemicals, drill bits and turbine products. Smith International also markets pipe, valves, and fittings as well as mill, safety, and other maintenance products to energy and industrial markets.

Reasons KLD added the company to the Domini 400 Social Index

  • Several of the company's products and services help mitigate the negative environmental impact of oil and gas exploration. Smith International's Trackmaster Plus Wellbore Departure System helps operators efficiently drill multiple zones in complex reservoirs from a single, existing wellbore, minimizing the impact on the drill site environment. In addition, the company has developed a synthetic-based drilling fluid system that yields drilling wastes that can be disposed of directly onto land as a soil fertilizer. This has environmental benefits over oil-based drilling fluids.
  • One woman, Margaret Dorman, serves among the company's five principal senior line executives. She is chief financial officer of the company.
  • The company is in the Energy sector, in which the DS 400 Index is underweight relative to the S&P 500.
