Affymetrix, Inc. Added to
KLD's Domini 400 Social Index

BOSTON, MA - October 4, 2004 - KLD Research & Analytics, Inc., an independent investment research firm, announced today that Affymetrix, Inc. (AFFX) has been added to KLD's Domini 400 SocialSM Index. Affymetrix, Inc. is headquartered in Santa Clara, California.

Affymetrix, Inc. develops systems for acquiring, analyzing, and managing complex genetic information used by researchers in the diagnosis and treatment of hereditary diseases such as cancer and cystic fibrosis. The company markets its products to pharmaceutical, agrochemical, and biotechnology companies, government research laboratories, academic research centers, and clinical reference laboratories.

Reasons KLD added the company to the Domini 400 Social Index

  • Affymetrix has a strong reputation for innovation in the field of genetic research.
  • In October 2003, Affymetrix and Agilent announced success in a joint effort to double the number of genes they are able to apply to one micro-chip, thereby reducing the cost to researchers. Researchers use the chips to analyze genetic makeup and search for genes that may cause disease. In November 2003, the company's gene chip technology was chosen as the tool for several research grants for the next phase of the Human Genome Project, which is to create an encyclopedia of the human DNA elements. The company spent 22.7% of FY 2003 revenues on research and development.

  • One woman, Susan Siegel, serves among the company's five principal senior line executives. She is president of the company.
