Synovis
Life Technologies, Inc. Added to KLD's Domini 400
Socialsm Index
BOSTON,
MA - October 1, 2003 - KLD Research & Analytics,
Inc., an independent research firm, announced today
that Synovis Life Technologies, Inc. (SYNO) has
been added to KLD's Domini 400 Socialsm
Index (DS 400 Index). Synovis Life Technologies,
Inc. is headquartered in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Synovis
Life Technologies, Inc. develops, manufacturers
and markets surgical devices such as implantable
biomaterial products and products used in microsurgery.
The company's interventional business develops,
manufactures, and markets micro wire forms and polymer
components used in cardiac rhythm management and
neurostimulation devices.
Reasons the company was added to KLD's DS 400
Index
- CEO
Karen Gilles Larson is widely credited with the
successful turnaround of the company. In 1989
Ms. Larson started her career with the company
as director of finance and administration. The
company named Ms. Larson CEO in July 1997.
-
Two women, Ms. Larson and Connie Magnuson, serve
among the company's four senior line executives.
Ms. Magnuson, who is the company's chief financial
officer, has served with Synovis Life Technologies
since 1997.
-
Ms. Larson's salary is notably low for the healthcare
industry. In addition, senior executives receive
the same benefits as all other employees, a policy
not usually found in the industry. She has stated
that the company is built around a value set,
not an individual. Interviews and portraits of
Ms. Larson published in 2002 and 2003 emphasized
her egalitarian values and ability to encourage
a diverse workforce to pull in the same direction.
One of the strategic changes she implemented was
to eliminate hierarchical communication and establish
an open-door policy.
