BB&T Corporation Added to
KLD's Domini 400 Social Index

BOSTON, MA - December 29, 2004 - KLD Research & Analytics, Inc., an independent investment research firm, announced today that BB&T Corporation (BBT) has been added to KLD's Domini 400 SocialSM Index (DS 400 Index). BB&T is headquartered in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

BB&T provides commercial banking, mortgage lending, trust, insurance, investment, and other financial services. The company has offices in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Georgia, West Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, Florida, Indiana and Washington, D.C.

Reasons KLD added the company to the Domini 400 Social Index

  • BB&T has an exceptional program for purchasing products and supplies from women- and minority-owned businesses. The program was established in 1990. In FY 2002, the company placed approximately 10% of its total subcontracting for goods and services with women-owned and minority-owned companies. This is an unusual program for financial services companies followed by KLD.
  • The company has demonstrated a strong commitment to employee education and training through various programs including its BB&T University. The company also offers a 17-month program through the BB&T Banking School, a cooperative venture between BB&T and Wake Forest. Another formal training option is the company's BB&T Management Development program, a six-month residential program for recent college or MBA graduates who have shown extraordinary potential. BB&T has 26 training centers in eight states.
  • The company has strong representation of women and minorities in on its board. Four of the company's 18-member board of directors are women or minorities.
