BOSTON,
MA - April 1, 2003. KLD Research & Analytics,
Inc., an independent research firm, announced today
that D. R. Horton, Inc. (DHI) has been added to
the KLD Domini 400 Social Indexsm. D.
R. Horton is headquartered in Arlington, Texas.
D.
R. Horton Inc. builds and markets single-family
homes for first-time and move-up buyers in metropolitan
markets. In addition the company offers financial
services. The company has 48 separate operating
divisions in 20 states. Company divisions include:
Continental Homes; Melody Homes; Regency Homes;
Schuler Homes; SGS Communities; Stafford Homes;
Torrey Homes; Trimark Communities; and Western Pacific
Housing.
Reasons KLD added the company to the DS 400 Index
KLD
added the company to the DS 400 Index for several
reasons, including:
- D.
R. Horton has representation of women in senior
management. One woman, Stacey Dwyer, serves among
the company's four principal senior line executives.
Ms. Dyer is executive vice president.
-
D. R. Horton is a highly decentralized company.
Each operating division president is responsible
for site selection; land development oversight;
building plan selection; and for obtaining the
necessary building permits. In addition, division
presidents are responsible for local charitable
giving campaigns and environmental policies.
- Some
divisions of D. R. Horton are members of the EarthCraft
House program. The program recognizes houses that
incorporate energy and resource efficiency both
during and after construction. Builders receive
points for integration of efficiencies into the
house design. Construction of houses must meet
minimum EarthCraft House requirements. For each
EarthCraft House, the builder must submit a final
worksheet for verification. The program is located
in southeastern U.S. Other company divisions have
energy efficiency programs as well.
- D.
R. Horton is one of six of the ten largest homebuilders
in America to use Bora-Care, a borate-based wood
treatment, as a substitute for Dursban in termite
control. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
had planned to phase-out of Dursban use as a termiticide
by 2004. Dursban is considered to be highly toxic
and is believed to damage the nervous systems
of children. The environmental group Beyond Pesticides
lauds Bora-Care as a low-toxicity alternative
to Dursban.
