Johnson Controls, Inc. Added to
the KLD Domini 400 Socialsm Index
BOSTON,
MA - July 7, 2003 - KLD Research & Analytics,
Inc., an independent research firm, announced today
that Johnson Controls, Inc. has been added to the
KLD Domini 400 Socialsm Index. Johnson Controls
is headquartered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Johnson
Controls manufactures and markets automotive systems
including seating components, interior systems,
and batteries. The company also manufactures control
systems including building temperature, security,
fire-safety management systems, facility-management
systems, and electric products.
Reasons KLD added the company to the DS 400 Index
KLD added the company to the DS 400 Index for several
reasons, including:
- Johnson
Controls has an excellent minority-supplier development
program. The company commits to buying at least
5% percent of its total goods and services from
minority suppliers each year. In addition, Johnson
Controls encourages its suppliers to institute
similar programs. In 2002 Johnson Controls achieved
its goal to spend more than $1 billion a year
for goods and services with women- and minority-owned
businesses.
-
Johnson Controls is a major manufacturer of energy-efficiency
controls for buildings. The company in conjunction
with several national programs and organizations
developed the Buildings for a Livable Future initiative.
Through the initiative the company offers seminars
designed to increase customer awareness of the
positive environmental and fiscal impact of green
buildings. In 2002 the company reported that between
1990 and 2010 customers in the U.S. using its
products and services would save a total of $18
billion in energy costs and reduce pollution by
approximately 352 million tons.
- Johnson
Controls is widely recognized for its high quality
product and services. In 2001 Johnson Controls'
Greenfield, Ohio, manufacturing plant won the
Shingo Prize for Excellence in Manufacturing.
In 1998 the company's Lexington, Kentucky, facility
won the Shingo Prize. The Shingo Prize is sponsored
by the National Association of Manufacturers to
recognize companies in North America that apply
the just-in-time and quality principles of Shigeo
Shingo, the developer of these principles at Toyota
in Japan. As of 2001, Johnson Controls' facilities
have won ten of the 65 Shingo Prizes awarded since
the award program began in 1989. The criteria
for recognition include improvements in on-time
delivery, quality, productivity, and the use of
advanced manufacturing methods including employee
involvement, continuous improvement, and on-the-job
training.
