Inc. Added to the KLD Domini 400 Socialsm
Index
BOSTON,
MA - August 19, 2003 - KLD Research & Analytics,
Inc., an independent research firm, announced today
that Coherent, Inc. (COHR) has been added to the
KLD Domini 400 Socialsm Index. Coherent,
Inc. is headquartered in Santa Clara, California.
Coherent,
Inc. designs, manufactures, and markets lasers and
laser systems. The company's products are used in
the scientific and instrumentation research and
development field; for the processing of nonmetals
and micromachining; for use in optical telecommunications;
and in computer-to-plate printing systems.
Reasons KLD added the company to the DS 400 Index
KLD added the company to the DS 400 Index for several
reasons, including:
- Coherent
has responded in a positive manner to several
issues concerning gay and lesbian employees. The
company has a policy against discrimination based
on sexual orientation and provides domestic partner
medical benefits to qualified partners.
- A
woman, Helene Simonet, is one of the company's
four senior line executives. She serves as Coherent's
executive vice president and chief financial officer.
- The
company has a profit sharing plan for which all
employees are eligible. Coherent distributes profits
to employees at the end of each fiscal quarter
that the company makes a pre-tax profit. Coherent
indicated it had made contributions to the plan
the last three fiscal years.
- Coherent
has a strong research and development program.
The company told KLD that it derived approximately
50-60%% of its FY 2003 revenues from products
introduced within the last three years.
