Wausau-Mosinee
Paper Corporation Added to KLD's Domini 400 Socialsm
Index
BOSTON,
MA - September 16, 2003 - KLD Research &
Analytics, Inc., an independent research firm, announced
today that Wausau-Mosinee Paper Corporation has
been added to KLD's Domini 400 Socialsm Index. Wausau-Mosinee
Paper Corporation (WMO) is headquartered in Mosinee,
Wisconsin.
Wausau-Mosinee
Paper Corporation manufactures, converts, and sells
printing and writing papers; specialty papers, including
pressure-sensitive backing, food service papers,
and sterilizable medical packaging; and towel and
tissue products. The company's brand names include
Wausau Papers, Astrobrights, Bay West, and EcoSoft.
Reasons the company was added to KLD's DS 400
Index
-
Wausau-Mosinee uses a totally chlorine free (TCF)
pulp bleaching technology at its Brokaw, Wisconsin
mill. TCF bleaching is unusual in the North American
pulp and paper industry. Historically, paper manufacturers
have used an elemental chlorine-based bleaching
process that releases persistent chlorine-based
chemicals, such as dioxin, into the air and water.
The EPA endorses elemental chlorine-free (ECF)
bleaching, which significantly reduces the amount
of dioxin discharged into the environment TCF
surpasses even ECF's environmental benefits. Many
health experts and environmental groups support
TCF bleaching for its greater potential to eliminate
dioxin.
-
The company buys pulp from other mills and recycled
fiber for pulping. Both the company's Towel &
Tissue Group and its Printing & Writing Group
use post-consumer recycled fiber. The Towel &
Tissue Group uses approximately 135,000 standard
tons of wastepaper annually.
- Wausau-Mosinee
encourages employee involvement through its "Pride
Idea" program. The company rewards employees
for suggestions on ways to reduce costs or improve
products. The company noted that more than 5,000
suggestions had been submitted since the 1997
merger of Wausau and Mosinee.
