100 Best Corporate Citizens 2007
The 8th Annual List of

Built  with financial and ESG ratings

The 100 Best Corporate Citizens list ranks firms based on how well they perform in eight categories:  shareholders, community, governance, diversity, employees, environment, human rights, and product. The scores draw on both financial information and measures of corporate social performance. The financial component is based upon annualized 3-year shareholder return. Environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance ratings are based upon KLD’s SOCRATES database of US company analysis.

KLD’s Analysis
Data for 7of the 8 categories used to rank companies for the list comes from KLD.  This data is collected as part of KLD’s proprietary research processes for SOCRATES, an online research database cover ESG performance.  Experienced KLD analysts spend over 5,000 hours each year vetting data from multiple sources, including direct communications with the companies.  KLD is an independent research provider that does not consult to the companies it evaluates.  While KLD does research on the global investible universe, company eligibility for the list is determined by membership on the Russell 1000, S&P 500, or KLD’s Domini 400 SocialSM Index.

History of the List
The 100 Best Corporate Citizens was developed in 2000 by Marjorie Kelly, Samuel P. Graves and Sandra Waddock.  Together they created a scoring system that ranked companies according to financial, environmental, social, and governance performace. The list was originally developed for Business Ethics magazine, the predecessor to Corporate Responsibility Officer  (The CRO).  The list  has gained national recognition as an indicator of best practices in the area of corporate social responsibility and has become the basis for numerous academic articles on governance and ethics of US companies.  As of 2007, the list continues to be produced by The CRO
