Where does the data in the KLD STATS spreadsheets come from?
KLD STATS is a snapshot of KLD’s ratings on companies at the end of a calendar year. For more information on how KLD rates companies, please see the KLD’s Research Methodology.
How many companies are covered in KLD STATS?
From 1991 – 2000, KLD STATS covered the S&P 500 and KLD’s Domini 400 Social Index. From 2001 – 2002, KLD expanded its universe of coverage in STATS to include the 1000 largest U.S. publicly traded companies by market capitalization.
Beginning in 2003, KLD expanded its universe of coverage in STATS to include the 3000 largest U.S. publicly traded companies by market capitalization. For more information please see the Features section.
How have academics created company scores with KLD STATS?
KLD STATS indicates the number of positive and negative indicators assigned to a company in a given year. The indicators are organized into seven stakeholder and social issue areas. To create a score for a company you can take the sum of positive minus negative indicators, sum the average of indicator scores within an issue area, or normalize the issue area scores then take the sum.
Is the data set consistent over time?
Yes. KLD rarely changes the indicators we use to rate companies. If an indicator was not used in a given year it appears in the spreadsheet with an N/R (not rated) for all companies, providing a comparable data set over time.
What does KLD STATS stand for?
KLD STATS stands for Statistical Tool for the Analysis of Trends in Social and Environmental Performance.
