Socially Responsible Investing, Corporations & Fiduciary Duties

INTRODUCTION

Like all resource lists, this one is not exhaustive.  I have indicated which sources contain the most complete references or bibliographies, so that you may pursue the topic further.

Many of the leading books and articles appeared before a body of experience existed with the practice of socially responsible investing.  Representations about the performance of socially screened portfolios – and therefore of SRI's impact on fiduciary responsibility – in works written before 1992 should be evaluated in that light.

In order to avoid duplicate entries, I have integrated materials from the legal literature since most of these articles are both relevant to and readable by general audiences.  Many, especially those on the performance of SRI portfolios, have an important role in any discussion of fiduciary responsibility.

I have not attempted a comprehensive bibliography of the leading cases on fiduciary responsibilities that lack a connection to socially responsible investing.  (Anyone looking for such a bibliography should start with the legal treatises cited below.)  The cases that link the two issues or that deal tangentially with the latter are very few.
